Dr. Shaohua Tang was trained initially as Western medicine physician at Yangzhou Medical College in China. After graduation in 1982, he continued his studies in a post graduate medical program at Suzhou Medical College focusing on Cardiophysiology/Cardiology for three years. He was then recruited into the Acupuncture Research Institute at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, conducting acupuncture research with Western medical theory and techniques. From 1985 to 1989, he did extensive research on the basic mechanisms of acupuncture along with acupuncture clinical practice and teaching. He was made Assistant Professor of Acupuncture during that period. At the same time, he also practiced internal medicine in Jiangsu Provincial Hospital, the affiliated university hospital. Throughout his practice, he made efforts to treat his patients in an integrated way, combining Western medicine with Chinese medicine. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Physiology/Pharmacology at Cornell University and then continued his research at Cornell on diabetes (the mechanisms of insulin secretion) as a post-doctoral research fellow from 1990 to 1998. After deciding to return to clinical medicine, he completed his three-year medical residency at the Brookdale University Hospital in New York City in 2001 and became an internal medicine board certified physician in the United States.
